Nikki Haley Gains Ground: New Hampshire GOP Poll Reveals Tightening Race with Trump

In the latest CBS News poll, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is gaining momentum in the New Hampshire GOP primary, narrowing the gap with former President Donald Trump to just 15 points. The survey, conducted by YouGov from Dec. 8-15, 2023, among 855 registered voters in New Hampshire, sheds light on the preferences and perceptions of potential Republican candidates.

The poll highlights Nikki Haley’s strong appeal, as she emerges as the most “likable” (55%) and “reasonable” (51%) among GOP contenders. Despite these positive attributes, Trump continues to dominate, with 51% believing he can “definitely” defeat Biden, compared to Haley’s 31%.

The New Hampshire GOP primary poll results are as follows:

  • Trump: 44%
  • Haley: 29%
  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis: 11%
  • Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: 10%
  • Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy: 5%
  • Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson: 1%

CBS News, in its analysis of the poll, suggests that Trump’s current support could translate into winning a majority of delegates in Iowa and 10-16 delegates in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, Haley’s support in New Hampshire is estimated to secure her 5-8 delegates, with DeSantis and Christie hovering around the state’s 10% threshold for delegate qualification.

The recent endorsement of Nikki Haley by New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a vocal never-Trumper, has added a layer of complexity to the primary dynamics. Trump, addressing supporters in a Durham rally, criticized Sununu, labeling him a “RINO” (Republican in name only) and emphasizing his pivotal role in maintaining New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary status.

Despite the political maneuvers and shifting dynamics, the New Hampshire GOP primary remains a focal point for the 2024 Republican nomination race. As the candidates vie for support, the poll results provide insights into the preferences and perceived strengths of each contender, setting the stage for a closely watched political contest.

The margin of error for the CBS News poll is plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.
