The Awakening: New York City’s Reckoning with Sanctuary Policies and the Urgency for Border Security

New York City, once a sanctuary for border crossers, is experiencing a wake-up call as the disastrous consequences of this policy unfold. The city, once a symbol of freedom and opportunity, is now struggling to cope with the influx of illegal immigrants pouring in at an alarming rate. While the United States was historically a destination for those seeking a better life, it was always under the condition of obeying the law. However, recent years have seen a shift in policies, with border security becoming lax under various administrations.

Under President Obama, border security was weakened, leading to an estimated 22.1 million illegal entries during his tenure. President Trump’s administration saw a decline in illegal immigration due to stringent border control measures, but the numbers surged again after President Biden took office, projecting an additional 30 million illegal entries. This influx of lawbreakers has resulted in a spike in crimes such as assault, rape, murder, child trafficking, and drug-related offenses.

Cities and states that declared themselves “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants have suffered the most, with New York City being particularly hard-hit. The city, once proud of its openness, is now reeling under the strain of accommodating thousands of migrants every month. Schools are struggling to cope with the influx, leaving parents frustrated and protesting outside educational institutions.

Finally, there seems to be a realization among some political leaders, including New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, that the current approach is unsustainable. Mayor Adams acknowledged the city’s impending destruction due to the influx of illegal immigrants, while Governor Hochul called in the National Guard and declared that New York is no longer in the sanctuary business.

Despite the urgent need for border security, the U.S. Senate has yet to vote on the “Secure the Border Act,” which was passed by the House of Representatives in May. New Yorkers, along with concerned citizens across the nation, are demanding an end to the flow of illegal immigrants. It is high time for political elites, like Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, to listen to the voices of their constituents and take decisive action to restore law and order at the border.
