Republicans Urge Defunding Harvard Over Antisemitism Controversy

Republican lawmakers are calling for Harvard University to be stripped of billions of dollars in federal funds and tax breaks following statements made by its president, Claudine Gay, regarding antisemitic speech on campus. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., emphasized that taxpayer dollars should not support universities fostering antisemitism and pledged to use all available tools to cut off federal funds for such institutions.

Harvard is currently under investigation by the federal Department of Education for potential violations of the civil rights of Jewish students. Despite calls for Gay’s removal after her testimony during a congressional hearing, Harvard’s governing board, the Harvard Corporation, expressed confidence in her leadership, stating that she is the right leader to address societal issues.

In response to these developments, Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., plans to introduce a bill imposing financial consequences on universities found to foster antisemitism. Federal funding to Harvard reached a record $676 million this year, including direct payments and COVID rescue funds. Harvard’s tax-exempt status and significant endowment further contribute to its financial resources.

Other Republicans, including Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have also advocated defunding universities over antisemitism concerns. Scott introduced legislation to defund universities engaging in or facilitating events promoting violent antisemitism, emphasizing that institutions promoting such ideologies should not receive taxpayer funds.
