President Biden’s Sign of the Cross During Netanyahu Meeting Sparks Speculation

During a one-on-one meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations, President Joe Biden unexpectedly made the sign of the cross while Netanyahu was speaking, prompting speculation about the meaning behind the gesture. Netanyahu had mentioned their decades-long friendship when Biden made the sign, which some interpreted as a humorous reference to his own age. The White House has not provided any clarification regarding the gesture.

Over the years, Biden and Netanyahu have had a sometimes frosty relationship, despite their long history. Biden criticized Netanyahu’s proposals regarding limitations on Israel’s court system’s oversight of the government’s actions.

During their meeting, both leaders expressed hope for brokering diplomatic relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, building upon the foundation laid by the Trump administration’s Abraham Accords. Biden’s administration played a role in opening Saudi airspace to flights from Israel. They discussed the possibility of forging a historic peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Under former President Donald Trump, several countries, including Bahrain, Kosovo, Morocco, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates, established diplomatic relations with Israel. The Saudi government has engaged in business dealings with Trump and his family since Trump left office, including a $2 billion investment with a company owned by Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Additionally, LIV Golf, funded by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, has held multiple events at Trump-owned golf courses.
