CNN’s Ratings Drop Following Trump Appearance

Former President Donald Trump’s appearance on CNN may have given the network a temporary boost in ratings, but recent reports indicate a decline in their prime time viewership. CNN has come under scrutiny for providing Trump with a platform to speak from, which has generated criticism from various sources.

During evening hours, CNN trailed behind Newsmax by approximately 22,000 viewers. However, CNN managed to surpass MSNBC and Fox News among viewers aged 25-54. Despite this, CNN’s prime time ratings were disappointing, with Fox News Tonight, the replacement show for Tucker Carlson Tonight, attracting around 855,000 more viewers than Anderson Cooper 360, which had a mere 447,000 viewers. Notably, Newsmax’s prime time shows outperformed CNN, despite Newsmax’s recent surge in popularity over the past two years.

Following the Town Hall with Trump, CNN anchors openly expressed their disapproval of the network’s decision. Oliver Darcy, a CNN reporter, received criticism for being “too emotional” in his newsletter, reflecting the backlash faced by the network from various quarters. While Trump commended CNN for boosting their ratings through his appearance, he later expressed surprise at the level of hostility he encountered within the network, as he believed they were aiming to attract new viewership.

CNN CEO Chris Licht defended the decision to host the Town Hall event, suggesting that it provided some answers that the American people were seeking. On the other hand, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper emphasized the importance of exposing the public to the former president’s campaign message, while also expressing his personal opposition and disgust towards Trump’s answers during the event.
